ABBYY Lingvo 11 for PC

1. Software and hardware requirements

  1. PC with 200 MHz or faster Intel® Pentium®/Celeron®/Xeon™, AMD K6/Athlon™/Duron™ or compatible processor 
  2. Microsoft® Windows® 2000/XP, Windows 98/ME (Cyrillic support required to work with the Russian interface)
  3. 64 MB of RAM for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP; 32 MB of RAM for 98/Me
  4. Free hard disk space:

    Note: During custom installation, Lingvo will rebuild the index and may require additional disk space to store temporary files. These temporary files will be stored in the folder into which ABBYY Lingvo 11 is being installed and in the Temp folder of your operating system.

    If there is not enough space on your hard disk, the setup program will display a message asking you to free up disk space and telling you how much space should be freed. You can obtain this information beforehand by clicking on the Space button in the Custom Setup dialog. In most cases, you will need 150 MB (including 35 MB in the Temp folder) for the Six Languages edition and 70 MB (including 20 MB in the Temp folder) for the English-Russian edition.

  5. Sound card, headphones or loudspeakers to listen to pronunciations
  6. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. The disk labelled "Disk 2/2" contains Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, which requires 27 MB of hard-disk space.
  7. CD-ROM drive.
  8. 3.5" floppy drive or Internet access for product activation.

 

2. Installing Lingvo 11 on your local computer

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Six Languages includes all the features of ABBYY Lingvo 11 English-Russian. 

To install ABBYY Lingvo 11 on your computer:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM disk labelled Disk 1/2 into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program will run automatically.
  2. Insert the Installation Floppy Disk in the floppy drive and follow the instructions of the setup program.

Note:

  1. You can only install ABBYY Lingvo 11 from the original media.
  2. If the setup program does not run automatically, you can install ABBYY Lingvo manually. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and double-clicking the Add or Remove Programs icon.
  3. If you install the program without using the Installation Floppy Disk (if, for example, your computer has no 3.5" drive), you will be prompted to activate the program when you first run ABBYY Lingvo. 
Installation modes

You can select either full or custom installation:

In the Custom Setup dialog box, click Advanced and select one of the two options:

Note: To be able to save personalized settings in Windows 98/Me, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Passwords>User Profile and enable "User can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your personal settings whenever you log in".

 

3. How is activation carried out?

Activation takes very little time and is carried out with the help of an Activation Wizard that is built into the program. The Activation Wizard has a friendly interface and is used for sending the necessary activation information to ABBYY. The same wizard is used for entering the Activation Code you receive from ABBYY during activation.  

Activation information is sent as a code (Installation ID) which is generated on the basis of information about the computer on which the program is being installed. No personal information about the user or computer is used for generating this code and this code cannot be used for identifying the user.

Important! You must have administrator's rights in order to be able to activate ABBYY Lingvo 11 on your computer.

Activation methods: 

In the case of activation via the Internet, the whole process is carried out automatically. In the case of activation e-mail, the user needs to enter the Activation Code received from ABBYY in the corresponding fields of the Activation Wizard.

Attention! 
Before you start activation, insert disk #1 (labelled Disk 1/2)  into the CD-ROM drive.

Once the activation is complete, the program can be used on the current computer without any restrictions. 

ABBYY Lingvo 11 can be reinstalled on one and the same computer an unlimited number of times without reactivation. However, if you make major upgrades, format your hard drive, or reinstall the operating system, an additional activation may be required.  

 

4. Installing the sound

You will not be able to hear a word pronounced if you chose not to install LingvoUniversal (En-Ru),  Universal (Ge-Ru) or checked off the Sound option when installing ABBYY Lingvo 11.

To install the sound:

  1. In Start>Settings>Control Panel double-click Add or Remove Programs. Add or Remove Programs dialog box will open.
  2. Select ABBYY Lingvo 11 English-Russian (ABBYY Lingvo 11 Six Languages).
  3. In the Program Maintenance dialog box that opens, select Modify and then click Next>. The Custom Setup dialog box will open.
  4. In the Custom Setup dialog box, select the Sound option and then select:

 

5. Removing ABBYY Lingvo 11

To remove ABBYY Lingvo:

  1. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. In the list of installed programs, select ABBYY Lingvo 11 and click Remove.

 

6. Network Installation

Installation of ABBYY Lingvo 11 on a network server can only be carried out by the system administrator. The installation consists of two stages. First, the program is installed on the server. From the server the program can be installed on workstations using one of the five methods:

To install ABBYY Lingvo 11 on the server:

  1. Insert the compact disk #1 (labelled Disk 1/2)  into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Run setup.exe from the FineReader CD-ROM with the /a command-line option.

For more information about installing ABBYY Lingvo 11 on workstations, working with the Licence Manager, and working with the program in a local area network, please refer to the System Administrator's Guide which can be found in the Administrator's Guide folder on the server on which ABBYY Lingvo 11 was installed.

 

7. Product Registration

Why register?

  1. Only registered users qualify for free technical support.
  2. Registered users get discounts on new versions of ABBYY products (provided such are offered).
  3. Registered users get e-mail notifications about new product versions and updates.

To register your product:

Select Register Now from the Help menu and fill in the Registration Form. Alternatively, you can register your product at the ABBYY Web site.

 

8. Message "Your LAN is running the maximum allowed number of copies of ABBYY Lingvo 11 application" is displayed

If the message "Your LAN is running the maximum allowed number of copies of ABBYY Lingvo 11 application" is displayed, check the number of additional licences you have added in the Licence Setup dialog box and the number of users working with ABBYY Lingvo 11 at the moment.

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC

1. Software and hardware requirements

  1. Processor: Intel StrongARM/XScale or Samsung S3C2410.
  2. Microsoft® Windows Mobile 2003 SE/Mobile 2003/Pocket PC 2002/PocketPC/CE 3.0.
  3. Memory:

  1. Microsoft® ActiveSync 3.5 or later to connect your Pocket PC and desktop PC.

 

2. Installing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC is installed from a desktop PC. ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC will be installed with the same interface language that was chosen for the desktop PC.

To install ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC:

  1. Install ABBYY Lingvo 11 on your desktop PC and connect your Pocket PC device to the desktop PC.
  2. Run Microsoft ActiveSync and make sure that your pocket and desktop PC are communicating. 
  3. Run the PDA Setup Manager (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®)).
  4. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

Notes:

  1. ABBYY Lingvo 11 can be installed on the pocket PC and on the desktop PC.
  2. You can update Microsoft ActiveSync at www.microsoft.com.
  3. You can use the PDA Setup Manager to change the program interface language as well as configure the dictionaries on the pocket computer and install only those dictionaries that you need at the moment. Additionally, you can use the PDA Setup Manager to repair or remove ABBYY Lingvo 11, and to upgrade the program to the full-function version (if you did not activate the program for some reason and it runs in trial mode).
  4. If you install ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC on a Pocket PC device with a Russian-language operating system, the program icon will be added to Start/Programs only after you have restarted your Pocket PC.

 

3. Activating ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC can operate both as a full-functional version and as a demo version. (The demo version operates as a full-functional version for 15 days or allows the user to open not more 500 cards.) To be able to use ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC as a full-functional version, you must activate the program. Activation is performed via the desktop PC.

To activate ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC:

Note: If you install the program on your Pocket PC device after you have activated ABBYY Lingvo on your desktop computer (or if the program was installed by using the Installation diskette), you do not need to activate ABBYY Lingvo for Pocket PC: the program will be installed in full-function mode by default.

 

4. Installing the sound files

You can hear the most common words in LingvoUniversal (En-Ru) and Universal (Ge-Ru) pronounced by native speakers.

To install the sound files:

  1. Select the Sound files option when installing Lingvo on your Pocket PC device.
  2. Select:

Note: The sound files are quite large and we recommend storing them on memory cards.

To hear a word pronounced:

  1. In LingvoUniversal (En-Ru) or Universal (Ge-Ru), open the card of the word you wish to hear.
  2. Click the loudspeaker icon to play the sound.

 

5. Modifying Pocket PC installation parameters

Installation parameters are modified via your desktop computer. Using the Modify option, you can change the configuration of dictionaries on your Pocket PC device and select an interface language.

To modify ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC installation parameters:

  1. Click on the Start button on the Windows taskbar and select Tools>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®).
  2. In the dialog that opens, select Modify, check the desired item and click Next...
  3. In the dialog box that opens, select program components you wish to install, clear the program components you wish to remove, and click Next...
  4. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

 

6. Repairing the Pocket PC installation

Your ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC installation can be repaired via your desktop PC. Use the Repair command to restore corrupted files.

To repair your ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC installation:

  1. Click on the Start button on the Windows taskbar and select Tools>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®).
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select Repair and click Next...
  3. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

 

7. Removing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC

ABBYY Lingvo can be removed from your Pocket PC device either directly or via your desktop PC.

To remove ABBYY Lingvo directly:

  1. On your Pocket PC device, select Start>Settings>System>Remove Programs;
  2. In the list of installed programs, select ABBYY Lingvo and then tap Remove.

To remove ABBYY Lingvo via your desktop PC:

  1. On your desktop PC, select Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®)  in Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager;
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select Remove and then click Next.

 

8. Installing dictionaries on memory cards

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC dictionaries can be stored either in the main memory or on memory cards.

To install dictionaries on a memory card, do one of the following:

We recommend closing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC before plugging or unplugging memory cards with dictionaries. If you do not wish to close down the program while plugging/unplugging the memory card, you will need to open the Dictionaries dialog box (Tools>Options...) to make the dictionaries on the card available to the program.

Important! When storing dictionaries on more than one memory card, the Repair feature of the PDA Setup Manager may function incorrectly.

 

9. Using the "Repair" function of the PDA Setup Manager when working with memory cards

  1. If you store some of your dictionaries on an external memory card, you have to connect this card before using the Repair function. ABBYY Lingvo 11 will display an error message each time it cannot copy a dictionary that is to be stored on an external memory card.
  2. If you have stored your dictionaries on several memory cards, the Repair function may work incorrectly trying to place on one connected memory card all the dictionaries which are to be stored on memory cards. If the card runs short of memory, ABBYY Lingvo 11 will display an error message warning you that some dictionaries cannot be copied.

 

10. Placing the ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC icon in the Start menu

When installing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC under some localized operating systems, the setup program may identify your start menu folder incorrectly. In this case, the setup program may place the ABBYY Lingvo 11 icon in the standard Start menu folder used by English-language operating systems (Windows\Start Menu).

If the setup program has not placed the ABBYY Lingvo 11 Pocket PC icon into your Start menu, try rebooting your Pocket PC. If this does not remedy the situation, copy ABBYY Lingvo.lnk from Windows\Start Menu\Programs into the folder that is used as the Start menu folder in your localized version of the operating system (e.g. \Windows\Ñòàðòîâîå Ìåíþ\Ïðîãðàììû). Now you can launch ABBYY Lingvo 11 in the usual way by selecting ABBYY Lingvo in Start>Programs.

 

11. Essential dictionaries

The Essential dictionaries are abridged versions of the corresponding Universal dictionaries. They provide only the most common and frequent translations.

 

12. Translating words and phrases from Microsoft Internet Explorer (for Pocket PC/ Pocket PC 2002) and Microsoft Reader

Copying text to the clipboard from Microsoft Internet Explorer (for Pocket PC/ Pocket PC 2002) and Microsoft Reader has certain peculiarities which make on-the-fly translation by pressing a hardware button impossible.

To translate words and phrases from these programs, copy the text to the Clipboard via the shortcut menu, launch ABBYY Lingvo, and select the Translate Clipboard command on the Tools menu.

 

13. Fonts and morphology in user dictionaries

To view some user dictionaries created by independent lexicographers you may have to install special fonts (such as Arial Unicode MS) and specify these fonts in Tools>Options>Fonts.

If the source and target languages of a user dictionary are supported by the system, (i.e. the corresponding language files are supplied with ABBYY Lingvo 11 Six Languages), you can install morphology support for these languages when installing the program. If the source or target language of a user dictionary is not supported by ABBYY Lingvo 11 Six Languages, you need to add morphology support for such languages manually. To be able to look up words in any grammatical form in such user dictionaries, do the following:

  1. Copy the *.amd and *.amm morphology files for the language concerned from the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM (Disk2/2>PDA tools>Pocket PC Morphology) into the ABBYY Lingvo folder on your desktop PC (Program Files>ABBYY Lingvo 11>LingvoCE>Dictionaries);
  2. Run the PDA Setup Manager on your desktop PC (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®)). The language of the copied morphology dictionary will be added to the list Morphology dictionaries for translating words typed in any grammatical form;
  3. Select the added language and click Next.

 

14. Using a hardware button to launch Lingvo

If Lingvo fails to launch or translate words from other applications when you press the assigned hardware button on your Pocket PC device, please re-assign the hardware button by going to Options/General in Lingvo and checking Assign Lingvo to the program hardware button. This problem may occur if you have re-assigned some of the hardware buttons via the Settings/Buttons dialog box of the operating system of your Pocket PC.


ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm® Handheld

1. Software and hardware requirements

  1. Motorola Dragonball EZ/VZ/i.MXL, Texas Instruments OMAP, Sony, or Intel XScale processor

2. Installing ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm Handheld

ABBYY Lingvo for Palm Handheld is installed from a desktop computer.

To install ABBYY Lingvo for Palm Handheld:

  1. Install ABBYY Lingvo 11 Six Languages (or ABBYY Lingvo 11 English-Russian) on your desktop PC;
  2. Make sure that Palm® Desktop is running on your desktop PC;
  3. Run the PDA Setup Manager (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo>PDA Setup Manager>Palm® Handheld);  
  4. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

3. Installing and removing ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries on your Palm device

Dictionaries are installed and removed via your desktop PC.

To install/remove dictionaries:

  1. Run the PDA Setup Manager on your desktop PC (Start>Programs>PDA Setup Manager>Palm® Handheld);
  2. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

You can select and install only those system dictionaries you really need on your Palm device. You can also install user dictionaries compatible with ABBYY Lingvo 11.

Important! The names of user dictionaries to be installed on a Palm device may include only the letters of the English alphabet and digits.

Note: In the case of palmOne Tungsten T5, you can use the system file manager to remove dictionaries:

  1. On the palmOne Tungsten T5, select Files and browse to the folder where you installed the Lingvo dictionaries (Programs>ABBYY Lingvo>Dic);
  2. Select the dictionaries you wish to remove and on the shortcut menu, select Remove.

You can enable or disable dictionaries installed on your Palm device. Only enabled dictionaries are used for translation.

To enable/disable installed dictionaries:

  1. On the Tools menu, select Dictionaries…
  2. In the Dictionaries dialog box that appears, select the required translation direction by using the button (you can use various dictionary sets for different translation directions;
  3. In the Use Dictionaries list, select the dictionaries you want to activate and deselect the dictionaries that should be deactivated.

 

4. Removing ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm Handheld

To remove ABBYY Lingvo from your Palm device:

  1. On your Palm device, select the Menu button (or the time button in the top left corner of the screen);
  2. In the Applications menu that appears, select Delete...;
  3. In the list of installed programs that opens, select ABBYY Lingvo and then tap Delete...

 

5. Working with several memory cards

ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm Handheld has been designed to work with dictionaries stored in the main memory and/or on one external memory card. However, you can also work with several (alternate) memory cards on which additional dictionaries are stored. To store ABBYY Lingvo 11 dictionaries on several memory cards, perform the following steps for each card:

  1. Connect the memory card on which your dictionaries will be stored to the Palm device;
  2. Run the PDA Setup Manager on your desktop PC (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Palm® Handheld);
  3. Select the dictionaries you wish to store on this card;
  4. Specify the memory card as the destination for the dictionaries.

As a result, you will have several cards with dictionaries that can be easily changed when required. In addition to the dictionaries stored in the memory of your Palm device, you will also be able to work with the dictionaries stored on the connected external memory card. We recommend that you close ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm Handheld before plugging or unplugging memory cards.

 

6. Essential dictionaries

The Essential dictionaries are abridged versions of the corresponding Universal dictionaries. They provide only the most common and frequent translations.

 

7. Using a hardware button to launch Lingvo

You can associate ABBYY Lingvo 11 for Palm Handheld with a hardware button of your Palm device to be able to launch ABBYY Lingvo by pressing this button.

To associate ABBYY Lingvo with a hardware button:

  1. Tap the Prefs button in the Application Launcher of your Palm device;
  2. In the Preferences dialog box that opens, select the Buttons button (on some devices you may need to select Personal>Buttons);
  3. In the drop-down list, select ABBYY Lingvo next to the button with which you wish to associate Lingvo.

 


ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile®

1. System Requirements

  1. Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ 2003/2003SE.
  2. Memory:

  1. Microsoft® ActiveSync 3.7 or later to connect your smartphone and desktop PC.

2. Installing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile

ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile is installed on your smartphone from the desktop PC. To install ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile:

  1. Install ABBYY Lingvo 11 on your desktop PC and connect the smartphone to the PC;
  2. Start  Microsoft® ActiveSync and make sure that the PC and smartphone are communicating;
  3. Start the Smartphone Setup Manager (Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager>Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®));
  4. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

Note: You can update Microsoft ActiveSync at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile.

 

3. Installing and removing ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries on your smartphone

ABBYY Lingvo can be installed either in the main memory of your smartphone or an SD memory card. We recommend installing dictionaries on a memory card.

To install/remove dictionaries in ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile:

  1. Make sure that your smartphone and your desktop PC are communicating;
  2. On the desktop computer, go to Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager and select Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®);
  3. In the dialog box that opens after the information from your smartphone has been loaded, select Modify, select Dictionaries and click Next...;
  4. In the dictionary list that opens, select the dictionaries you wish to install and specify where they should be stored, either in the main memory or on an SD card. In this dialog box you can also provide a path to user dictionaries and deselect those dictionaries that should be removed.
  5. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

You can also install dictionaries by using one of the following methods:

Removing dictionaries without running the Setup Manager on the desktop PC

You can remove dictionaries from your smartphone without connecting it to your desktop PC:

  1. Press the left selection key and in the Start menu, select the Files command;
  2. Browse to the folder where you installed the dictionaries (Program Files>ABBYY Lingvo>Dic) and select the dictionary you wish to remove;
  3. Press the right selection key and on the menu that opens select the Remove command.

 

4. Removing ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile

To remove ABBYY Lingvo 11 Smartphone for Windows Mobile from your smartphone, run the PDA Setup Manager on your desktop PC:

  1. Go to Start>Programs>ABBYY Lingvo 11>PDA Setup Manager and select Pocket PC, Smartphone (Windows Mobile®);
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select Remove and click Next.
