3. How is activation
carried out?
After you install ABBYY Lingvo 12, the dictionaries are running in trial
mode. You need to activate the dictionaries to use them in full mode.
Any additional dictionaries you purchase and add to the ABBYY Lingvo
Bookshelf also require activation to be used in full mode.
Activation takes very little time and is
carried out with the help of an
Activation Wizard
that is built into the program. The Activation Wizard has a friendly interface
and is used for sending the necessary activation information to ABBYY.
Activation information is sent as a
code (Product ID),
which is generated on the basis of information about the computer on which ABBYY
Lingvo 12 is installed. No personal information about the user or computer is used
for generating this code and this code cannot be used for identifying the user.
When you first run ABBYY Lingvo 12, the program prompts you to activate the
installed dictionaries.
- Click Activate Dictionary (serial
number required). The ABBYY Lingvo 12 Activation Wizard
will be launched.
Note: If
you choose not to activate the dictionary at first launch, you can activate the dictionary at a later time.
- In the dialog box that opens,
enter your serial number and click Next>.
- Select an activation method:
- via the
Internet
Activation
is carried out automatically and takes only seconds to complete.
An Internet connection is
required for this method.
If, for some technical
reason, activation via the Internet fails to complete successfully, launch the Activation Wizard from Help>Activate
Dictionary. In the dialog box that opens,
select by fax or
otherwise.
- by
e-mail
The program will prompt you to send an e-mail
message to ABBYY containing the information required to activate the
dictionary. The e-mail message will be generated automatically. You
will receive an Activation Code in reply.
Important! Be sure not to alter the subject field and the body of the generated
e-mail message.
- by phone
Select your country in the corresponding dialog box
of the Activation Wizard. The wizard will show the telephone numbers
of the nearest ABBYY office or partner in your area.
Communicate the serial
number and the Product ID of your copy to the technical support
manager (you will see this information displayed in the Activation
Wizard).
Important!
Activation Codes may be as long as
60 characters and take some time to dictate over the phone.
- by fax or otherwise
In most countries, you can also activate your
dictionary by fax.
The text of the fax containing the required information will be
generated automatically. The wizard will ask you to print out this
text and send it to the fax number indicated on the form.
Be sure to write or type in your own fax number, to which your
Activation Code will be sent.
You can also obtain your Activation Code, at any time, on the program
Web site at
http://www.lingvo.ru.
Type the serial
number and the Product ID of your copy in the corresponding field of
the on-line form (you will see this information displayed in the
Activation Wizard).
- Once you have received your Activation Code
by phone,
fax or e-mail,
enter this code in the corresponding dialog box of the Activation
Wizard.
If you interrupted the activation process,
you can launch the Activation Wizard again by going to Help>Activate
Dictionary.
Enter your serial
number again and then select the
Enter Activation Code
option.
Note: When activating via the Internet,
you do not have to enter any Activation Code.
- Click Next>. In the dialog
box that opens, enter your
registration data.
- Follow the instructions of
the Activation Wizard to complete the activation.
Once the activation is complete, the dictionary can be used in full mode on
the computer where it is installed.
You can re-install ABBYY Lingvo 12
on one and the same computer, using the same Activation Code, as many times as
you need. However, if you make substantial changes to your system configuration,
format your hard disk or re-install the operating system, you will need to

- On the memory card, create a folder and name it Program Files (unless such folder already exists). In this folder,
create a folder named ABBYY Lingvo. In the ABBYY Lingvo folder, create
a folder named Dic and copy the desired dictionaries into this folder
by means of a Card Reader device or by using third-party applications.
(The full path to the folder will be as follows: \SD Card\Program
Files\ABBYY Lingvo\Dic.)
We recommend closing ABBYY Lingvo 12 Pocket PC before plugging or unplugging
memory cards with dictionaries. If you do not wish to close down the program

dictionary that is to be stored on an external memory card.
- If you have stored your dictionaries on
several memory cards, the Repair function may work incorrectly
trying to place on one connected memory card all the dictionaries which are
to be stored on memory cards. If the card runs short of memory, ABBYY Lingvo
12 will
display an error message warning you that some dictionaries cannot be copied.
9. Placing the ABBYY Lingvo 12 Pocket PC icon in the Start menu

operating systems (Windows\Start Menu).
If the setup program has not placed the
ABBYY Lingvo 12 Pocket PC icon into your Start menu, try rebooting your
Pocket PC. If this does not remedy the situation, copy ABBYY Lingvo.lnk from
Windows\Start Menu\Programs into the folder that is used as the Start menu folder in your
localized version of the operating system (e.g. \Windows\Ñòàðòîâîå Ìåíþ\Ïðîãðàììû). Now
you can launch ABBYY Lingvo 12 in the usual way by selecting ABBYY Lingvo
in Start>Programs.
10. Essential

The Essential dictionaries are abridged
versions of the corresponding Universal dictionaries. They provide only the most common
and frequent translations.
11. Translating words and
phrases from Microsoft Internet Explorer (for Pocket PC/ Pocket PC 2002) and Microsoft
Reader
Copying text to the clipboard from Microsoft Internet
Explorer (for Pocket PC/ Pocket PC 2002) and Microsoft Reader has certain peculiarities
which make on-the-fly translation by pressing a hardware button impossible.
To translate
words and phrases from these programs, copy the text to the Clipboard via the
shortcut menu, launch ABBYY Lingvo, and select the Translate Clipboard
command on the Tools menu.
12. Fonts in user
dictionaries
To view some user dictionaries created by
independent lexicographers you may have to install special fonts (such as Arial

13. Using a hardware
button to launch Lingvo
If Lingvo fails to launch or translate words from
other applications when you press the assigned hardware button on your Pocket
PC device, please re-assign the hardware button by going to Options/General in
Lingvo and checking Assign Lingvo to the program hardware button. This
problem may occur if you have re-assigned some of the hardware buttons via the

OS™ dictionaries on your smartphone:
- Place the
ABBYY Lingvo
CD-ROM (Disk1)
into the CD-ROM drive of your desktop PC;
- Run
the software for smartphone synchronization and make sure that the smartphone is communicating with the
desktop PC;
- Use the File transfer
module to copy the desired dictionaries from the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder located on the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM into the

Lingvo\Dic folder on the ABBYY Lingvo
CD-ROM contains:
-
Dictionary files. These have the extension
.lsd (e.g.
ReligionRuEn.lsd
is the Russian-English
Dictionary of Religious Terminology). Copy the required dictionaries
into the ABBYY
Lingvo\Dic folder on your memory card. Some of the dictionaries
may be provided with a dictionary of labels. These also have
the extension .lsd and their name is made up of
the name of the related dictionary followed by _abrv (e.g.
ReligionRuEn_abrv.lsd is the dictionary of labels for the Russian-English Dictionary
of Religious Terminology). Be sure to copy the accompanying
_abrv.lsd dictionaries onto the memory card as well. The Abbrev.lsd
dictionary contains labels for all dictionaries, and it must be
copied when installing any dictionary.
-
Folders with dictionary index files. These are required for PCs
only. Do not copy these folders onto the memory card.
Important!
By default, all the dictionaries you have copied onto the memory card are
enabled.

translation direction to ensure smooth operation of the program. Once you have
