Selecting
Profiles
When selecting a profile, you first need to consider the
characteristics of the scanned images. Use the following questions as
guidelines:
- What
is the resolution of the images?
- Are the
images primarily color, grayscale, or bitonal? Do they contain text,
pictures, or a combination of the two?
- Do the
images contain line drawings?
- Do you
want to reproduce the background in the encoded image?
- What
is the quality of the text? Is it typeset or handwritten? Is it consistent
in weight throughout or faded in places?
- Are
the images single page or multiple page? (PNM files, for example, may be
multiple pages.)
The answers to these questions determine whether you should
use a bitonal or color profile to encode the images.
