--threshold-level=<0-100>

The threshold-level option interacts with the pix-filter-level and shape-filter-level options to determine the balance between foreground and background. A threshold level of 50 gives equal room for the foreground and the background to fluctuate around their local average value. In practice, a threshold of 75 is preferred, which gives much more room for the background to fluctuate.

Examples that work well with this default value are:

• sharperimage3
• harper300
• jefferson_sketch
• declar_ind

However, the segmentation can sometimes be improved by lowering this value and giving more room for the threshold color to fluctuate.

• flyer: 25 works best
• skin: 50 works best

Another reason to prefer a threshold-level of 75 is that it always work better on photos. Only on very rare occasions (manuscripts, threshold-level=60) do we recommend profiles where this value is lowered.
