Embedded and Linked Objects |
Embedded or linked objects, when double-clicked, open the application that created them and place a copy of themselves into that application window. If the application you're working in supports in-place activation, menus and toolbars change to those of the application that created the object and a hatched border surrounds the object while editing.

Embedded Objects |
If the object is embedded, any changes you make affect only the object in the worksheet. This is analogous to making a photocopy and marking up the copy while leaving the original undisturbed.

Linked Objects |
If the object is linked, any changes you make to the object affect the actual file containing the object.
Once you've linked an object into a worksheet using Insert Object or Paste Special, you can update the link, change it, or eliminate it. To do so, choose Links from the Edit menu to bring up the Links dialog box.
