Imaginary or Complex Numbers

Keystroke: 1i or 1j

i or j

Represents the imaginary unit. Note that you must type 1i or 1j, not i and j, which are variable names. In either case, the '1' disappears when you click outside the expression. Complex results use the same notation.

Notes:

• You can type multiples of i and j similarly, for example, 2i or −2.5j.
• There are a variety of functions in Mathcad for handling complex numbers.
• You can choose to display complex results as either i or j.
