Special Functions and Syntax Used in Symbolic Results

When evaluating symbolic expressions with either the Symbolics menu or live symbolic evaluation, you may see special functions and constants that only have meaning under symbolic evaluation. Answers containing these operators can't be evaluated using the equal sign for evaluation, but they can be evaluated with the symbolic evaluation operator, or the choices on the Symbolics menu.

These include:

• Euler's constant, γ
• Catalan's constant, G
• Cosine and Hyperbolic Cosine integrals, Ci(x) and Chi(x)
• Dilogarithm_Function, dilog(x)
• Dirac Delta (Unit Impulse) function, Δ(x)
• Exponential integral, Ei(x) (Cauchy principal value) or Ei(n,x)
• Fresnel Cosine and Sine Integrals, FresnelC(x) and FresnelS(x)
• Generalized Hypergeometric Function, hypergeom(n1, n2..., d1, d2..., z)
• nth Derivative of absolute value and signum, abs(n,x) and signum(n,x) (two argument versions are not available as a numeric functions)
• Polygamma and Digamma functions, Psi(n,x) and Psi(x)
• Sine and Hyperbolic Sine integrals, Si(x) and Shi(x)
• Lambert's W function, W(x) and W(n,x)
• Riemann Zeta function, Zeta(s)

There are also several variable names that have meaning in symbolic results, but which cannot be directly evaluated in Mathcad. These typically arise as a result of solving equations symbolically.

• Z~ an arbitrary integer
• NN~ an arbitrary non-negative integer
• B~ a binary value 0 or 1
