Rescue Data can be used only when you cannot start Windows and want to save your data. If you can start Windows, it is recommended that you use Backup and Restore on Windows.
Required storage medium for Rescue Data
One of the following storage media is required for saving rescue data.
- A blank DVD/BD disc (If your computer is not equipped with an internal optical disc drive, an external DVD/BD writable drive is required.)
- USB flash drive
- An external hard disk drive
Notes
- Even if your computer is equipped with a DVD-RAM disc writable drive, you cannot save rescue data to this storage media.
- If your computer is equipped with a BDXL disc writable drive, only 100 GB BDXL discs can be used for saving rescue data.
- If an AC adapter is provided for the external hard disk or external DVD/BD writable drive, plug the AC adapter into a power supply.
- If you are currently using the encryption function for your internal HDD/SSD, decrypt encrypted files.
About unusual noise and unusual behavior during data rescue
Stop using your computer if the VAIO itself vibrates or overheats during data rescue. If you keep using your computer under these circumstances, it may cause a more serious malfunction.
How to restore rescued data
You can restore rescued data using the VAIO Data Restore Tool. Click Start, and select the VAIO Data Restore Tool on Windows to start up the VAIO Data Restore Tool.
Back up your data regularly
There may be a case where you might lose the data stored on your computer due to unexpected issues or a computer virus. To avoid this, it is recommended that you back up your data regularly on Windows.
When you perform a regular backup, back up your data using Windows Backup and Restore. To backup your computer using Backup and Restore, do the following: start Windows, click Start, select Control Panel, System and Security, and Backup and Restore.
