System Requirements
^ Contents
If you are experiencing any form of problem whatsoever please ensure that your computer complies with the minimum system requirements listed here. If this is not the case you will most likely experience severe performance problems playing the game. Team17 cannot be held responsible for any damage sustained to systems if installation on a non-compliant OS, software or hardware configuration is performed.
Note: If you are experiencing problems running Worms 3D on Windows 2000 it is recommended to update your operating system to Service Pack 2. Please note that Worms 3D utilizes DirectX 9.0a and is not compatible with Windows 95 / NT.

In order to get the very best from your Worms 3D playing experience we advise that your computer complies with the following recommended system requirements.

SecuROM™ Copy Protection for CD-ROM
Worms 3D has an incorporated next generation copy protection system developed by Sony DADC in order to prevent software piracy. The game CD 1 must be present within your computer prior to running the software. This security system will actively check for the presence and authentication of an original disc and if undetected the game will not run successfully.

It is recommended to close all other background tasks as they may inadvertently affect successful SecuROM detection. If you have multiple CD-ROM capable devices within your system it is advised to perform a game install from the primary CD-ROM drive.

The SecuROM protection system has the highest available drive compatibility for disc security but with some types of CD-ROM / DVD-ROM devices it may in extremely rare cases be incompatible. If you do encounter any problems whilst attempting to run the game and feel that it may be possibly due to a drive incompatibility then please contact SEGA Customer Services in the first instance.

Game Play
^ Contents
If you experience general game performance problems please consult the following:

OpenGL
^ Contents
The OpenGL API (application programming interface) was originally developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI®). It is now a computer industry standard API utilised for the purpose of 3D video display rendering and 3D hardware acceleration in games such as Worms 3D and is a required game resource. It is strongly recommended to download and install the very latest video drivers to ensure that your computer system complies with these requirements.

OpenGL Compatibility
OpenGL 1.4 must be installed within your system prior to running Worms 3D. If this is not installed you may experience severe performance problems or the game may not run at all. Your video card and drivers must be 100% compatible with OpenGL 1.4.

If your video card is not hardware accelerated the game will run in software mode and exhibit severe slowdown during play. If you are unsure regarding the specifications or compatibility of your video card and drivers with OpenGL 1.4 please contact your hardware manufacturer directly for further information and possible software updates.

Whilst your hardware may not be OpenGL 1.4 compliant you may still be able to run the game with the very latest drivers, but you may experience an omission of effects or corruption abnormalities with the video display.

OpenGL Errors
On attempting to run Worms 3D if the game reports a "Could not load OpenGL subsystem" you will require a specific video driver update. Native video drivers that are supplied as standard with your Windows operating system do not have fully included support for OpenGL. Compliant drivers for OpenGL 1.4 are produced and provided directly through the video chipset and card manufacturers respectively. An installation of these updated compliant drivers will automatically supply OpenGL support to your system.

Note: For computer systems that have multi-monitor support enabled it is strongly recommended to disable the secondary monitor output prior to playing Worms 3D.

When installing replacement drivers you may possibly receive a prompt stating that the new driver updates are not WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) digitally signed. This indicates that the drivers are not fully tested by Microsoft and you will have supply manual confirmation for the driver installation.

If you are unsure as to whether drivers are suitable for updating, decline their installation and contact your video hardware manufacturer for further advice. If you are still experiencing difficulties with your video display please contact SEGA Customer Services directly.

Note: Motherboard integrated video chipsets may exhibit performance problems. This may be hardware limited as system memory could be shared for use as video memory.

Video Hardware Acceleration
If the game graphics seem to run at a very slow rate this may be a result of incorrectly set Windows video hardware acceleration.

Whilst it will be possible to play Worms 3D utilising other available manufacturer video chipsets and drivers we cannot guarantee stability or performance of the game.

Note: Because of limitations within some laptop mobile chipsets and the 3D hardware requirements of Worms 3D, we therefore cannot guarantee 100% compatibility.

DirectX Diagnostic
^ Contents
The DirectX Diagnostic Utility (DXDiag) comprised within DirectX 9.0a will enable you to check for WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) digital signatures within your individual system hardware. If it is apparent that any of your system components are non-compliant and deemed uncertified by Microsoft you may need to contact the hardware manufacturer primarily for possible software driver updates.

As an alternative it is recommended to consult the Microsoft web site directly for further advice regarding DirectX. Here you will be able to find detailed technical reference and troubleshooting information.

We strongly recommend updating system drivers for your devices directly from the guidelines indicated by your hardware manufacturer. If you are unsure as to the components within your system it is possible to perform basic DirectX identification and driver functionality tests on your system hardware components initially. The details of this test may be outputted to a text file.

DirectSound
The DirectSound component of DirectX is utilised by Worms 3D for the purpose of audio management. During development the game has been tested on the more popular sound hardware configurations available today. If you encounter any sound related problems with the game please check that you are using the very latest available audio drivers to ensure 100% compatibility.

If you are experiencing audio problems with your sound card there is a possibility that the software drivers are not fully compliant with DirectSound. It is highly likely that you will require a driver update. For further information please contact your hardware manufacturer directly.

Note: Worms 3D supports DirectSound3D for positional audio effects. Configure this option within your Windows Sound Mixer to take advantage of this particular feature.

Audio Hardware Acceleration
If the game sound is stuttering or corrupted this may be a result of incorrectly set Windows audio hardware acceleration.

External Sound Control Systems
Some systems incorporate sound control programs that require configuring separately from the Windows Sound Mixer. If you experience any problems customising sound within Worms 3D please consult your supplied hardware documentation.

DirectInput
The DirectInput component of DirectX handles device input for Worms 3D. If you are experiencing input problems with your devices there is a possibility that the software drivers are not fully compliant with DirectInput. It is highly likely that you will require a driver update. For further details please contact your hardware manufacturer.

Note: During the development of Worms 3D, the game has been played with a 16 button, 4 axis game pad. Whilst this is an optional input device for the game, we cannot guarantee a full level of compatibility with all types available. You may have to manage button configuration with an external profiling program in some cases.

Keyboard Limitations
Some keyboards are limited in that they may not recognise certain combinations of three or more simultaneously pressed keys. If this is evident during play this problem is not software based but is directly attributed to the hardware limitations of the keyboard. Usage may also prove problematic on systems with compacted keyboards that incorporate keys that are assigned with multiple functions.

Note: It is recommended not to press any custom key functions that may be available on your system (such as multimedia shortcuts) during play. Doing such may produce undesirable effects such as loss of program focus or game instability.

Network
^ Contents
Worms 3D supports the TCP/IP protocol connection method only in order to ensure that you receive the maximum stability possible from networked games in either Local Area Network (LAN) or through Wormnet (Internet) via GameSpy.

Note: We have no plans to and do not support IPX protocol within Worms 3D.

It is very simple to connect and play as Worms 3D will automatically look for IP addresses that are running the game. You will need a minimum of a valid TCP/IP network connection and a dynamic or fixed IP address to play over network. For Wormnet play via the Internet an ISP and GameSpy accounts are required also.

It is important to ensure that you have the correct protocol and network libraries installed prior to play. Remember to establish that your adapter or modem is fully functioning and that all cables are connected.

Note: If you are in any doubt on the setup or reliability of your connection please contact your network administrator or ISP directly for assistance to rule out any possible problems.

You risk either a loss of connection or program focus (by the auto-running of the Worms 3D launcher) in removing and re-inserting the Worms 3D CD 1 during net games and it is not recommended. A disc spawning facility is not supported for network game play and it is a requirement that CD 1 is always present within a computer system for each game participant.

If you have any difficulties running Worms 3D over network, please check here for solutions to more common problems.

Winipcfg Command for Windows 98 / Me
If you have two possible Internet connection methods such as a network card and a dial-up adapter use the Windows winipcfg command to establish an active IP address.

Ipconfig Command for Windows 2000 / XP
If you have two possible Internet connection methods such as a network card and a dial-up adapter use the Windows Ipconfig command to establish an active IP address.

Ping Command
Despite our best endeavours, we cannot control the speed of connections and data flow over networks and the Internet. This command allows you to establish if your IP address and other IP addresses are currently active and functioning.

The Ping command also indicates the general overall quality of your Internet connection to other players. It sends a small amount of data (packet) to another computer IP address and determines the incurred time period for a response back.

The higher an indicated duration establishes that there is a poorer level quality of connection evident (high latency). If the duration however is indicated as lower it establishes that a higher level quality of connection is exhibited (low latency).
Note: The ping command determines a connection not network adapter functionality.

LAN Connection
^ Contents
You need a valid TCP/IP network connection, a dynamic or fixed IP address to play Worms 3D over a local area network.

Internet Connection
^ Contents
An account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is required and a TCP/IP network connection, a dynamic or fixed IP address to play in order to play via the Internet and directly access the Wormnet game server. You will also need to supply your email address, nickname and password to setup and utilise a valid GameSpy account for the undertaking of Internet games.

If you have any difficulties with your Internet connection, such as trying to establish a workable setup, or are having any experience of instability please contact your ISP in the first instance. It is sometimes a possibility that there may be maintenance work being carried out on your network system whilst you are trying to connect, as an alternative your ISP may be able to offer a more direct reason or even a solution to your connection problem.

When connecting via the Internet, some service providers such as CompuServe® or AOL® may automatically disconnect after a period of inactivity. Please disable such timeout functions prior to playing Worms 3D.

GameSpy Arcade from GameSpy Industries, Inc.
For general ease of use and Wormnet access this software package is included with Worms 3D in order to provide connection services and coordinate all online players.

When using GameSpy Arcade you can meet and interact with other players within game lobbies to text chat and initiate / join games. This software package is a required resource for Wormnet play. If you require further assistance with your connection to GameSpy Arcade please consult their web site directly for more information on the network system and their account setup procedures.

Note: If you decline the installation of GameSpy Arcade it will not be possible to connect to Wormnet successfully and participate within Internet games.

Firewall Support
Firewalls are incorporated to prevent hostile acts being performed against your system storage devices (such as virus infection). Unfortunately if your computer is behind a firewall this may prevent game connection and it must be disabled prior to play.

Worms 3D utilises port 10017 and this must be opened in the outbound and inbound directions to host and join games. Please consult the hardware guidelines provided by the manufacturer for information on how to achieve this. Alternatively contact your network administrator or ISP for further assistance. If you wish to review further information regarding firewall support please consult the GameSpy web site.

Disconnected Messaging
During play you may receive messages indicating that you have lost connection and this could typically occur due to the following.
