Partial Fractions

To expand a rational expression into a sum of fractions with linear or quadratic denominators, select the variable to use in factoring the denominators, and either:

• Type [Ctrl][Shift][.] and the "convert, parfrac" keyword followed by a comma and the variable or expression on which to factor denominators, or use the Symbolics toolbar to modify the live symbolics operator.

  - or -

• Choose Variable > Convert to Partial Fraction from the Symbolics menu.

If the denominator can't be factored in the selected variable, the expression returns unchanged.

Notes:

• This command does not expand any expression containing constants with decimal points.
